Rep Ogah vows to enhance welfare for inmates and staff at NCS

Embarking on its oversight duties, the House of Representatives Committee on Reformatory Institutions has started inspecting the Abakaliki and Afikpo Custodial Centres in Ebonyi State.

Guiding the Committee is Hon Chinedu Ogah, the Chairman representing Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency. During a visit to the Nigeria Correctional Services headquarters in Abakaliki, Ogah urged the officers to be diligent, emphasizing that the Federal Government, through his Committee, is devoted to enhancing their welfare.

Raising concerns, Ogah questioned the contractor responsible for the construction at the Abakaliki Correctional Services headquarters for failing to install essential water and toilet facilities on the premises.

He reiterated the Committee’s dedication to ensuring optimal performance of Custodial Centres nationwide for the benefit of both inmates and the general public.

Responding to inquiries from NCS personnel, Ogah reassured them that their issues would be promptly addressed.

“Our purpose here is to oversee ongoing activities and the well-being of the inmates. It is up to us to improve our country. A contractor can deliver quality work and still make profits.

“Your safety is linked to the state of this facility. If this environment is safe and conducive, it will reflect on your well-being. Upholding the right standards will protect your lives.

“We allocate budgets for all projects. Ensure thorough supervision and accurate reporting because you are the ones on the front line.”

At the Afikpo Custodial Centre, Ogah engaged with inmates and NCS staff, assuring them that the Committee is actively addressing their challenges and seeking swift solutions.

The Committee is scheduled to have a formal meeting with Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru of Ebonyi State on Friday.
