Protesters in Lagos Threaten Street Occupation

#EndBadGovernanceInNIgeria demonstrators in Lagos are determined to take to the streets starting from Monday to initiate a new phase of their protest if their demands are not met by the government.

During an address at Gani Fawehinmi Park on Saturday, Mr. Hassan Soweto, a Youth Rights Campaign member and protest coordinator, made this declaration.

According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria, a court order had confined all protests in the state to the park before the nationwide action began.

Should the protesters follow through with their threat, they will be breaching the court order.

Soweto mentioned that if their demands remain unmet by Sunday night, protesters will vacate the park in Ojota and move onto the streets.

He emphasized that despite being restricted to the park, they would march to Alausa, the administrative center of Lagos, if their demands are not addressed.

There will be no gathering at the park on Sunday, with residents encouraged to attend their places of worship and pray for peace in the region.

Soweto urged the police to monitor suspected troublemakers attempting to disrupt the peace at the park.

NAN observed that the police had designated the service lane on Ikorodu Road for the protesters while leaving the other lanes open for motorists.

They also noticed an increase in vehicular traffic on Saturday compared to the lighter flow on Thursday and Friday.

Commercial activities have resumed in Ojota and its surroundings as more shops reopened for business.

Mr. Adegoke Fayoade, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, led other security personnel in providing protection for the protesters for the third consecutive day.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, no protestors were detained on Friday.
