Prison Break: 2 inmates flee, six wounded at Sapele Penitentiary

On Tuesday, April 29, a jailbreak occurred at the Nigerian Correctional Service custodial centre in Sapele, Delta State. This incident took place a few days after inmates protested alleged mistreatment and set the facility on fire.

The inmates were protesting against the selective amnesty granted to some prisoners by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa. They insisted on equal treatment for all prisoners.

Two inmates managed to escape, and six others were wounded and taken to the Sapele Central Hospital for treatment. According to Daily Trust, the unidentified inmates fled through the wall of the women’s section of the facility.

According to a security official, the inmates were misinformed and believed that the COVID-19 amnesty applied to all of them, disregarding the conditions for the amnesty.

Onome Onowakpoyeya, the NCoS Public Relations Officer in the state, also confirmed the incident, stating, “Yes, it is true. Two inmates escaped in the early hours of Tuesday and six were maimed; they were shot while attempting to escape too and they have been hospitalised.”
