The Arrest of a Policeman for Fatally Shooting an Abia Businessman

Abia State Police Command has taken into custody Police Corporal Obagi Njok for the fatal shooting of Abia native Emmanuel Okocha, a businessman.

The arrest followed outcry from Abiriba community residents in Ohafia Local Government Area over the alleged killing of Okocha by a reckless police officer in Aba.

According to reports, officers from the Rapid Response Squad of the Nigeria Police Force shot the businessman along MCC Abayi-Aba on Friday, claiming he refused to offer a bribe despite possessing all necessary vehicle documents.

In a statement released by the State Police Public Relations Officer ASP Maureen Chinaka, it was disclosed that Njok was previously assigned to the Abayi Police Division.

The statement indicated, “The officer has been apprehended, and necessary disciplinary procedures have been initiated.

“Appropriate disciplinary actions and sanctions will be enforced promptly, and he will be subjected to the full extent of administrative and legal consequences.

“As the process unfolds, the family of the deceased and other stakeholders will be kept informed.”

Expressing regret over the incident, Chinaka extended condolences to the family, friends, and well-wishers of the deceased.

“The Abia State Police Command deems the occurrence as deeply regrettable. We express our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and well-wishers of the deceased,” the statement conveyed.

The Police Public Relations Officer also pledged the command’s dedication to emphasizing professionalism and adherence to the rule of law.

“The Abia State Police Command reassures the public of our unwavering commitment to maintaining professionalism and upholding the rule of law.

“We vehemently denounce any form of misconduct, unprofessional behavior, or indiscipline among our personnel,” he affirmed.
