Police Response to Shehu Sani’s Statement on #EndSARS Protesters in Custody

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Nigeria Police Force clarified that there are no individuals involved in the #EndSARS protests currently held in any of their detention facilities.

During a dinner event commemorating the 2024 Democracy Day on June 12, Shehu Sani, a former senator who represented Kaduna Central, called on President Bola Tinubu to pardon any remaining #EndSARS protesters in custody.

Responding to Sani’s remarks, the Force’s spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, stated, “No one is facing wrongful persecution for their involvement in the #EndSARS demonstration.”

The police force explicitly refuted the recent claims made by Senator Shehu Sani during the 2024 Democracy Day Dinner at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on June 12, 2024. Adejobi stated that it was falsely asserted that some young individuals had been detained since the 2020 #EndSARS protests.

“To reiterate, no individual across Nigeria is currently held by the police or undergoing unjust persecution due to their participation in the #EndSARS movement.

“The matters surrounding the protest have been extensively deliberated, investigated, and documented, with valuable lessons learned. Forgiveness has been extended, and progress has been made.

“We appeal to the public to dismiss these assertions and be confident in our dedication to upholding justice, the principles of law, and human rights.

“We advocate for the verification of information before issuing public statements to prevent harm and avoid incitement.”
