Police Report Lack of Cooperation from Victim’s Mother

Providing an update on the alleged rape case in the Alakuko area of Lagos, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer SP Benjamin Hundeyin revealed that progress in the investigation has been hindered by a lack of cooperation from those involved.

According to Hundeyin, the house linked to the case has been identified in collaboration with @Lagosdsva. However, key individuals including the landlord, the suspect, the survivor, and her family were not present. Efforts to engage the survivor’s mother via phone have been unsuccessful as she is unwilling to assist the police.

Expressing frustration with the lack of community support, Hundeyin stated, “Everyone on the street has refused to cooperate with the police. Radio silence!”

The case was brought to light when an anonymous user, #Rhwaley, shared videos of the victim and reported the incident. The assault reportedly took place recently, and when the victim’s family raised concerns to the landlord, they were met with dismissive remarks claiming, “Nothing will happen.”

Initially, verifying the report posed challenges for Hundeyin. He mentioned, “I have been mentioned in several posts related to this. I have repeatedly called the DPO Alakuko for updates, but the response has always been, ‘No report of such incident has been made’.”

Jubril Gawat, the Senior Special Assistant on New Media to the Lagos State Governor, responded to the initial post, advising the family to seek assistance, particularly from the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, known as #Lagosdsva.

Despite the obstacles faced, SP Hundeyin affirmed that the investigation is still ongoing.
