Police Protection Ordered by IG for Protesters

To ensure the safety of participants in the upcoming #EndBadGovernance protests on 1-10 August 2024, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has instructed senior police officers to provide protection.

This directive was communicated in a letter dated 29 July 2024, signed by CP Johnson Adenola, the Principal Staff Officer of the police chief, following a request made by human rights lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN).

According to a report by PUNCH Online, Adegboruwa had reached out to the police chief on 28 July 2024, requesting police protection for the protesters.

The letter specified that senior officers are to adhere to the senior lawyer’s request as per the instructions from the IG.

Additionally, the IG has sought a meeting with Adegboruwa at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday to further discuss the request.

“I am to inform you that the Inspector General of Police has directed the Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (Operations and Intelligence), the Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) in charge of Zonal Police Headquarters, and the Commissioners of Police (CPs) in charge of State Commands across the country to attend to your request.

The letter also mentioned that the IG wishes to meet with Adegboruwa at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Tuesday, 30 July 2024, for further deliberations,” as stated in the letter.
