Police open fire on protester opposing property seizure in Lagos

A man in Isheri Oke, Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State was shot by police on Monday.

Seun, the son of the market head (Iya Loja) in the area, sustained a gunshot wound to his left hand while protesting against the community’s alleged takeover by Prince Michael.

The incident occurred around 1pm when local youths attempted to prevent police officers and a court sheriff from executing an order purportedly sanctioned by a Lagos High Court.

According to Vanguard, the court sheriff had placed a public notice in the area on behalf of Prince Michael Adesegun Bakare, citing a judgment in suit No ID/1352/2001. The notice, dated February 17, 2020, claimed possession of the land in Isheri Oke and environs near Olowora.

All persons on the land through unauthorized means were warned that their stay was illegal and unlawful, as possession had been taken by order of the court.

Residents alleged that the police and the court sheriff arrived with thugs, provoking the local youths to resist the action.

An eyewitness, Mrs Temitope Shittu, stated, “When the court Sheriff and police, with the thugs, attempted to place the notice, youths in the area tried to stop them and in the process, they hurled stones and bottles at the police.

Some shots were fired by the police, resulting in Seun getting hit. He was taken to Mayflower hospital but was rejected, subsequently being moved to Tomade hospital in Ojodu Berger where he is currently receiving treatment.”

Eyewitnesses also reported that the police fled the scene, abandoning three of their vehicles.
