Police issue a warning to vigilantes regarding the use of excessive force on civilians

A caution has been given to vigilantes operating in Warri and its surrounding areas in Delta State against the use of excessive force on civilians by the Warri Area Commander of the Nigeria Police, Mr. Imade Graham. This warning was conveyed during an address to members of the Warri Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists on Friday.

Mr. Graham emphasized the need for collaboration with the NUJ to uphold order in Delta communities. He revealed that vigilantes in Warri and its vicinity will undergo orientation on community policing to improve the quality of their operations.

While acknowledging the vigilantes’ role as part of the neighborhood watch in enhancing security in their communities, the Police Area Commander raised concerns about instances where some vigilantes have crossed the line and adversely affected members of the public.

“Vigilantes have no justification or legal basis to use excessive force on civilians. This behaviour will be thoroughly investigated,” he stated, adding, “Their actions should not inconvenience the public.”

The Area Commander pledged to engage with the Divisional Police Officers to oversee vigilantes’ conduct, including addressing issues such as inappropriate attire used by impostors claiming to be police officers.

He expressed, “Guidance sessions will be arranged for them. They are voluntary groups that assist us in combatting crime.

“They are advised against setting up roadblocks or operating, particularly along expressways, without police presence.

Orientation sessions will be organized, and all aspects will be reviewed.”

While acknowledging a notable decrease in crime rates in Warri and surrounding areas recently, Mr. Graham attributed this improvement to the proactive policing efforts of the officers.

As the Ember months approach rapidly, the Police Area Commander mentioned that an operational plan has been established by the Command.

“We will undoubtedly adhere to these plans to ensure the safety of Warri and its vicinity,” he reassured.
