Police in Abuja and Kano among others, report havoc caused by rioters during protests

During the recent protest for hunger in Nigeria, the Nigeria Police Force expressed shock at the extensive damage caused by protesters on the first day.

According to the Police, mobs wreaked havoc in various states including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, Borno, Niger, Yobe, Jigawa, Gombe, and Bauchi.

Addressing journalists on Thursday, Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, revealed these details.

There were protests across the country on Thursday as citizens expressed their frustration over the increasing hardship in Nigeria.

IGP Kayode described the aftermath of the first day of protests as “mind-boggling” due to the widespread destruction.

Reports indicate that there were incidents of attempted government building takeovers and looting of public facilities.

Egbetokun disclosed that many warehouses and shops were looted and damaged in several locations

He mentioned, “There has been destruction in Kano, Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, FCT Abuja, Niger, Jigawa. Police stations have been destroyed, there have been attempts to take over government houses, looting of government infrastructures, several warehouses and shops have so far been looted and, in several instances, destroyed.”

The Police chief cautioned against inciting anarchy under the guise of protesting rights and urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement.

He appealed for calmness and cooperation with the Police and other security agencies during this challenging period.
