Police Container Torched at Abuja Checkpoint, Four Arrested

Reports from the Federal Capital Territory Police Command on Thursday revealed that hoodlums set fire to a police container compartment at the Nyanya checkpoint.

Additionally, there was an incident where individuals attempted to vandalize the Tipper garage Police post in the Nyanya area of FCT.

Contrary to widespread claims suggesting that the Nyanya Divisional Police Headquarters was destroyed by hoodlums, the command clarified that it was actually the police container compartment at the Nyanya checkpoint that was targeted.

The command, in a statement issued by spokesperson Josephine Adeh, announced the arrest of four suspects who were caught attempting to vandalize the Tipper garage Police post.

Adeh stated, ”Contrary to the circulating news regarding the burning down of Nyanya division by violent protesters, the FCT police command clarifies that it was not the police division that was set ablaze. Instead, it was the police container compartment at the Nyanya checkpoint that was targeted, along with the attempted vandalism of the Tipper garage Police post by four suspects: Mathias Jude, 29, residing in Nyanya Area D, Mohammad Ahmed, 23, Abba Jibril, 18, and Mohammad Haruna, 18 – all of whom have been apprehended.”

Adeh emphasized that FCT Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, expressed disapproval of the destruction of public and police facilities during the protest.

She also warned that any individual caught in such acts would be subject to legal consequences.

Adeh reiterated, “While acknowledging residents’ right to protest, Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, condemns the destruction of public or police infrastructure. Any violent protester apprehended for damaging public property will face the full force of the law.”
