Police announce no procession in Edo for August 1 protest

The Edo State Police Command stated on Wednesday that protesters would not be allowed to march in a procession during the nationwide #Endbadgovernance protest scheduled for August 1, 2024.

During a press briefing in Benin City, the Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, revealed that this decision was part of the agreement made by the protest organizers in the state.

Adegboye emphasized that the protest is planned to occur only in designated areas across the state’s three senatorial districts.

He cautioned that individuals gathering outside the assigned locations would face legal action.

As he stated, “The protest will involve occupying specific areas without any street marches or processions. It is essential for the protest to remain peaceful, with no harassment, road blockades, or coercion.”

“The police will ensure the protection of peaceful protesters as they have the right to express their grievances. Emergency preparedness will include the provision of water and ambulance services at the protest venue,” he added.

“Anyone found in unauthorized protest areas will be treated as a criminal. The police will act promptly and decisively,” Adegboye asserted.

The commissioner mentioned that the police command would collaborate with protest leaders to prevent any disruption by troublemakers.

He urged citizens to remain calm and assured them of their freedom to conduct their daily activities.

Meanwhile, Governor Godwin Obaseki encouraged the protest organizers to explore alternative forms of demonstration, apart from street marches and processions.

Obaseki urged the public to stay vigilant and thwart any attempts by miscreants to misuse the protests to carry out illegal activities like looting and causing chaos.

He stated, “Security agencies have been put on high alert to maintain law and order, providing protection for genuine protesters who comply with regulations and practice nonviolent demonstrations.”

“Those intending to use the protest as a cover for criminal actions will face the full force of the law. We are committed to safeguarding lives, property, and the progress of our state,” Obaseki declared.
