Poland’s top police official hospitalized after explosive gift received during visit to Ukraine

Poland's top police officer hospitalized after gift he received while visiting emergency crew in Ukraine explodes

The top police officer of Poland has been hospitalized due to an explosion caused by a gift he received while visiting emergency crews in Ukraine, upon his return to headquarters in Warsaw.

The Commander in Chief of the Polish police, Jaroslaw Szymczyk, reportedly received the gift from one of the heads of the Ukrainian emergency services during a visit to the country from December 11 to 12.

The attack occurred on Wednesday, December 14, as reported by Poland’s interior ministry. The ministry stated, ‘As a result of the explosion, the Commander suffered minor injuries and has been in the hospital for observation since yesterday.’

Additionally, a civilian employee at police headquarters was also injured but did not require hospitalization.

Earlier, Polish media had reported an explosion at police headquarters that injured Szymczyk and damaged the ceiling in the building.

The ministry mentioned, ‘The Polish side asked the Ukrainian side to provide relevant explanations.’

This incident follows a series of letter bombs sent to targets in Spain, including the Ukrainian embassy, and the reception of ‘bloody packages’ containing animal eyes by several Ukrainian embassies abroad earlier this month.
