Plateau varsity suspends operations due to security concerns, governor advocates for improved safety measures

The shutdown of Plateau State University in Bokkos Local Government Area is in response to recent attacks.

Following an assault by armed individuals on Friday in the Chikam community near the university, resulting in the death of a 200-level student, the institution has been temporarily closed.

In a statement released on Friday, the university’s Registrar, Yakubu Ayuba, announced the closure.

He stated, “Due to the unfortunate events that transpired at Plateau State University Bokkos and the surrounding community on Friday, April 19, 2024, and the emotional impact on the students and staff, the management has decided to close the university for ten days starting from April 19, 2024.

“This step aims to allow the security situation to stabilize and reduce the risk to the university community.

“Therefore, the ongoing first semester exams are postponed and will resume on Thursday, May 2, 2024.”

The Registrar also mentioned, “Buses have been arranged by the management to transport stranded students from the university to Barkin Ladi on Friday, April 19, 2024.”

Meanwhile, Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who serves as the Visitor to the University, has strongly condemned the recent attacks on the institution and surrounding areas, emphasizing the need for improved security measures to protect the residents.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, he expressed, “In response to the tragic incident at Chikam, a neighboring community of Plateau State University Bokkos, resulting in the loss of a 200-level Computer Science student, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has urged for calm as security forces are working towards restoring peace.

“Governor Mutfwang denounced the attack as savage, assuring citizens, especially students, of the government’s commitment to ensuring their safety and security.

“He called on them to remain composed in light of the tragedy, stating that the government is resolute in apprehending and prosecuting the perpetrators.

The press release highlighted Mutfwang’s emphasis on the need for collaboration among university officials, students, community leaders, and security forces to bolster security and ensure the well-being of all individuals in the region.

“He lauded the swift response of security agencies to violent incidents, urging them to continue fulfilling their constitutional duty of safeguarding innocent citizens.”

Furthermore, Mutfwang extended his condolences to the family of the deceased student and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
