Plateau State Governor enforces 24-hour curfew in state capital

The governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has announced a 24-hour curfew in Jos and Bukuru metropolis.

He stated on Sunday night that the curfew was put in place in response to instances of looting in the Bauchi Road community and Zolo Junction by hoodlums on Sunday.

A directive signed by the governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, stated, “In a decisive measure to bolster security and ensure public order, Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has enforced a 24-hour curfew on Jos/Bukuru Metropolis, starting from midnight on Sunday, August 4, 2024.

“Governor Mutfwang, in consultation with state security agencies, made this decision after examining the actions of dishonest individuals who took advantage of the nationwide protest to cause havoc to innocent citizens.

“The governor observed that these criminal elements, armed with daggers, machetes, and other dangerous weapons, broke into shops and restaurants along Bauchi Road and Zololo Junction, looting foodstuffs and other valuable items.

“Governor Mutfwang stressed that the curfew is in the best interest of all citizens and urged everyone to adhere strictly to guarantee the safety and welfare of all residents. He instructed security agencies in the state to ensure complete enforcement of the curfew throughout the Jos/Bukuru Metropolis.”

The directive further mentioned that the governor cautioned those contemplating further violence against innocent citizens to halt immediately or face severe legal consequences.

It continued, “The governor also urged the relevant security agencies to remain vigilant and preemptive in carrying out their duties to forestall any potential disruptions to law and order.

“Governor Mutfwang expressed appreciation to the citizens of Plateau State, especially the clergy and imams, for their steadfast support of government policies and initiatives. He recognized their cooperation and adherence to instructions during the planned nationwide protest and commended their dedication to upholding peace and unity.

“The peaceful behavior of our people before, during, and after the nationwide protest is praiseworthy. I encourage everyone to continue upholding this culture of peace as we collaborate to construct a united and progressive Plateau”.
