Blaming bad roads and insecurity: Peter Obi links the deaths of 35 Nigerians in Kogi and Enugu to government failures

In the aftermath of tragic incidents in Kogi and Enugu states, where a total of 35 lives were lost, Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of Labour Party in the upcoming 2023 election, pointed fingers at the poor road infrastructure and security challenges during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

On Wednesday, Obi expressed his concerns through various posts on his official X handle.

Recent accidents in Kogi claimed 19 lives on Sunday, while a separate tragedy in Enugu resulted in the loss of 16 lives on Tuesday.

Highlighting the issue, Obi emphasized the importance of investing the country’s resources in developing internal roads rather than focusing on projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Superhighway.

“Confirmation of two tragic road accidents in Kogi and Enugu states reveals the grim reality of 35 lives lost. The Kogi incident, occurring on Sunday along Okene/Lokoja route, resulted in the tragic death of 19 individuals. Similarly, along the Nsukka/Enugu Road in Enugu state, 16 lives were lost on Tuesday,” he shared.

Both the Enugu State Police Command and Kogi State Federal Road Service Corps, FRSC, have verified the accidents.

While the specific causes are yet to be determined, Obi connected these incidents to the deplorable road conditions and prevalent insecurity.

“I consistently advocate for the proper allocation of our limited resources towards improving our internal road networks to ensure they are safe for use, rather than diverting significant funds towards grand super highway projects. These crucial areas should take precedence,” he expressed.

Offering his condolences, he extended sympathies to the families of the deceased and the injured, praying for strength during this difficult time. He also expressed condolences to the governments and residents of Kogi and Enugu states.

Obi has been in disagreement with the Nigerian federal government regarding the justification for the extensive construction of a 700-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal highway.

Conversely, the Nigerian government has accused Obi of potentially instigating unrest amongst the Igbo community against the Tinubu-led administration.
