PDP Group Cautions Against Imposing Minority Leadership in Senate

An organization supportive of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) called PDP Action 2023, has expressed its concern that any effort to impose a leadership on the minority parties in the senate would lead to destabilization of the red chamber.

The group equated the act of imposing a minority leadership in the chamber to a plot to establish dictatorship in Nigeria.

However, the group cautioned Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President, not to allow the All Progressives Congress (APC), the majority party in the senate, and its allies to interfere in the race for the minority leadership.

In a statement, Hon. Rufus Omeire, Chairman of the pro-PDP group, also criticized the attacks on Sen Aminu Tambuwal, a former governor of Sokoto State, who aspires to be the minority leader in the senate.

Omeire said, “Why are certain individuals in the majority party and their partners so eager to control the leadership of the minority parties in the senate?

“We advise the newly elected president of the senate not to allow people to disrupt the senate by intervening in the issue of minority leadership in the 10th senate, but instead to focus on assisting the President in creating effective legislation and implementing good policies to promote good governance in Nigeria during this critical period of change and renewal.”

He further stated that those attacking Tambuwal are concerned that he may obstruct the alleged plan for dictatorship in Nigeria.

Omiere added, “Ever since the issue of minority leadership in the 10th Senate became prominent, the media has been inundated with fabricated, orchestrated, sponsored, desperate, irresponsible, and generally distasteful stories planted by individuals with excessive ambition to suppress the voices of opposition and future accountability in the 10th senate.

“They have targeted Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal as their problem.

“They have made all sorts of baseless and unfounded accusations against him. They allege that he once betrayed some people and the PDP. Behind these accusations is an attempt to reopen the matter of the 2022 PDP presidential primary.

“They have consistently tried to attribute to him the issue of betraying some of his friends because of the patriotic role he played during the PDP national convention. We cannot defend Tambuwal, but at the appropriate time, the relevant question will be asked: Who betrayed whom?”
