Artifacts from Germany Returned to Oba of Benin by Nigerian Government
Two looted artifacts returned by Germany have been handed over by the Federal Government to the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, in Benin City.
According to NewsNow, these artifacts were initially placed in the care of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) in 2022 upon their return to Nigeria.
Mr. Olugbile Holloway, the Director-General of NCMM, presented the artifacts to the Benin monarch at his palace on Saturday, May 18, 2024.
Historical records indicate that the returned artifacts, which include bronze and wooden Royal Stools (Ekete), were crafted during the reigns of Oba Eresoyen and Oba Esigie centuries ago.
These valuable items were looted from the Oba’s Palace during the British punitive expedition under Oba Ovoranmwen Nogbasi's rule.
