CBN Governors Could Be Barred from Political Activities by National Assembly
Proposed changes to the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 may prevent top officials within the apex bank from participating in partisan politics.
The amendment aims to stop the chairman, governor, and deputy governors of the CBN from involving themselves in political activities or joining any political party for a period of three years after their service.
Former Abia Central Senatorial District representative, Darlington Nwokocha, initiated the amendment before being removed from office by an Appeal Court in Lagos in 2023.
Past CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, saw himself being dragged into the political scene prior to the 2023 presidential election, as a group acquired the intention and nomination forms of the All Progressives Congress on his behalf.
