Reports indicate that a woman has been taken into custody for the alleged fatal beating of her stepdaughter in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State. The incident is said to have occurred after the girl's father purchased plantains for the household. It was reported that despite the intervention of a female soldier, the woman, purportedly the wife of a soldier stationed at the 6 Division of the Nigeria Army in Port Harcourt, called her husband who then instructed the female soldier to leave their residence. Following the female soldier's departure, the 10-year-old girl reportedly collapsed and passed away as a result of continued beating by her stepmother. The Former Taraba Governor, Jolly Nyame’s 12-Year Sentence and N1.6bn Fraud Conviction Upheld by the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has affirmed the conviction and 12-year prison sentence of former Taraba state governor, Reverend Jolly Nyame, for embezzling N1.6 billion during his tenure from May 1999 to May 2007.   A unanimous judgment was delivered by a panel of five Justices led by Justice May Odili on Friday, February 7th. The judges deemed Nyame's appeal to reverse his conviction and sentencing as lacking merit. Remember that in May 2018, Justice Adebukola Banjoko of an Abuja High Court found the former governor guilty on 27 counts of money laundering out of the 41-count charge brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
