INEC de-registers 74 political parties

INEC, the Independent National Electoral Commission, has de-registered 74 political parties and left just 18 others.   At a news conference in Abuja on Thursday February 6th, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, announced this decision.   The commission conducted a review of the performance of political parties after the 2019 general elections to determine their qualification status.   Below is a list of the 18 recognized parties and the 74 deregistered parties. Tragedy Strikes as High-Speed Train Derails in Northern Italy, Claiming Two Lives

On Thursday morning, a high-speed train derailment in Italy's Lodi province resulted in the loss of two lives and injuries to 28 individuals. The tragic incident occurred in the town of Casalpusterlengo, approximately 30 miles southeast of Milan. Following the derailment, all services on the Milan-Bologna high-speed route have been suspended, and emergency teams, along with firefighters, are on-site assessing the damage. The train's engine left the tracks around 25 miles from Milan, striking a freight wagon on a parallel track before colliding with a building and becoming detached from the rest of the train. Alleged Murder and Burial of Wife in Bayelsa Kitchen

A 30-year-old man, Monday Uwem, has been arrested by the Bayelsa State Police Command for the alleged killing of his 26-year-old wife, Blessing Menaboo.   Allegedly, Uwem buried his wife's corpse in the kitchen of their apartment at Aparama Fishing Camp in Akassa community of Brass Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. The Capital Punishment for Killing an Uber Driver

A death sentence by hanging has been passed by the FCT high court on Obinna Echanu for the murder of an Uber driver.   Obinna Echanu and Everly Nnerun stood trial for allegedly conspiring to kill Uber driver Edwin Ali on December 26th, 2016, along the Abuja airport road.   Echanu and Nnerun faced five charges, including armed robbery, conspiracy, illegal possession of firearms, and culpable homicide.   In the murder case brought forward by the Nigerian Police, Justice Peter Kekemeke acquitted Nnerun due to lack of evidence but convicted Echanu. Echanu was sentenced to death by hanging, as his counsel failed to prove his innocence in court.
