The Emir of Kano, Sanusi, believes that polygamy is the primary factor contributing to poverty in Northern Nigeria. Speaking at the maiden convocation of the Federal University, Gusau, in Zamfara state, on Friday January 24th, he emphasized that the culture of polygamy is significantly responsible for the high poverty rate in the North compared to the South. Represented by one of his aides, Usman Bugaji, the Emir stated that the practice of marrying multiple wives and having more children than one can provide for has led to an 80 percent poverty level in the North, while the percentage is significantly lower at 20 percent in the South. He highlighted the contradiction of people unable to care for one wife yet willing to marry three, leading to children being left to beg for sustenance.
