83 Britons Depart from China on Special Flight to Escape Coronavirus

An early morning rescue flight from China carried 83 Britons and 27 other foreigners.    Social media photos showed the evacuees wearing face masks as a safety measure against the virus.      The chartered flight left Wuhan at 9:45am local time on Friday, January 31, and is scheduled to land at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire at 1pm UK time. The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Borno Council has expressed its condemnation of the arrest of Daily Trust reporter Olatunji Omirin by armed soldiers.   Omirin was arrested on Thursday by operatives of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri, and has since been released, as confirmed by the Executive Director/Editor-in-Chief of the paper, Malam Naziru Mikailu, last night. "Yes, Omirin is back at home with his family and he is hale and hearty," Mikailu said. Authorities have uncovered a drug-smuggling tunnel at the US border with Mexico. The 4,300ft passage, believed to have been constructed by El Chapo’s Sinaloa cartel, is reportedly the longest known illicit underground route into the United States.     The drug-smuggling tunnel, averaging 70ft below ground, nearly 6ft high, and 2ft wide, was reportedly equipped with a ventilation system, high-voltage power cables, and drainage. According to the Mirror, the tunnel starts in an industrial area of the border city of Tijuana in Mexico and ends in a neighborhood of San Diego, California. Osun State High Court in Ikirun, presided by Justice Jide Falola, has passed a death sentence by hanging on three men, Nuhu Jimoh, David Ndubisi and Oluwaseun Aderibigbe, for their involvement in a bank robbery that led to the loss of many lives.   During the robbery on February 12, 2016, a total of 32 people, including two police officers and two bank employees, were killed in the exchange of gunfire between the robbers and law enforcement.   In his verdict, Justice Falola found the men guilty of orchestrating coordinated attacks on First Bank, Union Bank, and Skye Bank, all located on the same street in Ikirun.
