Republicans looking happy while Democrats look dejected as senate trial ends without witnesses, clearing path for Trump

Following the Senate vote of 51-49 against calling witnesses on Friday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his Republican colleagues appeared jubilant, while Senate Democrats seemed disheartened.

The narrow vote came after Republican senators asserted that further evidence was unnecessary, moving closer to acquitting President Trump next week.

Donald Trump’s impeachment trial in the Senate is now expected to conclude next Wednesday, soon after Trump’s State of the Union speech to Congress on Tuesday.

Two Republicans, Mitt Romney and Susan Collins, aligned with Democrats in their pursuit for witnesses, but their support was inadequate as Republicans held the majority of 51 votes against calling witnesses, while 49 other senators (mostly Democrats) voted in favor.

The testimony of witnesses like John Bolton is crucial for Democrats to substantiate the House of Representatives’ accusations of Trump’s abuse of power and obstruction of Congress by withholding military aid to Ukraine in exchange for investigations into his political rival, Joe Biden.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democrats could be seen visibly upset as they labeled the vote as ‘a tragedy on a very large scale,’ while the Republican senators eventually had the final say.

PDP writes UK, US and EU over Ihedioha's loss at the Supreme Court

The loss of Emeka Ihedioha at the Supreme Court to Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress has prompted the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to address a petition to the United Kingdom, United States, and the European Union. Uche Secondus, the chairman of PDP, led a protest to the US embassy and the UK high commission in Abuja on Friday January 31 to reinforce their concerns. Apart from Uche Secondus, the protest involved the participation of Senate Minority Leader Enyinnaya Abaribe, former President of the Senate Adolphus Wabara, former Imo State governor Chief Achike Udenwa, and members of the National Working Committee (NWC). The objective was to express dissatisfaction with the judgment of the Supreme Court that ousted Emeka Ihedioha as the governor of Imo State. The PDP's pet...

The Senate Votes 51-49 Against Calling Witnesses in Impeachment Trial, Clearing Trump

The impeachment trial of Donald Trump in the senate is poised to conclude next Wednesday as senators voted 51-49 against calling witnesses on Friday night.   Democrats had sought witnesses to support their allegations that Trump abused his power and obstructed Congress by withholding military aid to Ukraine in exchange for investigations into Joe Biden.                                   Following new revelations from former National Security advisor John Bolton, who stated that Trump instructed him to aid the pressure campaign on Ukraine with White House counsel Pat Cipollone present, senators deliberated for four hours on whether to call witnesses. Although two Republicans, Mitt Romney and Susan Collins, sided with Democrats in the push for witnesses, the majo...
