Narrative of a Nigerian Author: His Mother’s Ordeal after His Father’s Death
Romeo Oriogun, the Nigerian poet and author who achieved recognition by winning the 2017 Brunel International African Poetry Prize, has shared the story of his mother's ostracism after his father's passing due to her refusal to marry his late father's cousin.
Oriogun revealed that he and his siblings were separated from their mother, a traumatic incident that resulted in his mother having to travel from Ipetu-Ijesha in Osun State to Benin to visit them for a year.
According to the poet, his mother, to whom his new book is dedicated, passed away at the age of 43 while pregnant with the child of a man who had promised her a house in exchange for bearing a son for him.
