New Ebola case logged in DR Congo days before outbreak's expected end
The announcement of a new Ebola case in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) comes just days before the expected end of the country's largest ever outbreak. The World Health Organization (WHO) revealed the new case on April 10, which was confirmed in Beni, a town at the center of the epidemic in eastern DRC. The patient passed away in a hospital on Thursday morning after displaying symptoms several days earlier.
This new case, reported 52 days after the last recorded case, halted the initial plans to declare an end to the outbreak on April 13. The outbreak, which began in August 2018, has claimed over 2,200 lives.
