‘Go home quietly’ – Asari Dokubo warns Rivers LG chairmen

A fresh crisis is brewing in Rivers State over the tenure of the 23 council chairmen. This is just as Niger Delta leader and former militant warlord, Muhajid Asari Dokubo, has asked local government chairmen to accept the end of their three-year tenure and “go home quietly.” NewsNow recalls that Governor Siminalayi Fubara had instructed the chairmen, supported by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, to step down when their term ends. However, they refused, claiming that the pro-Wike faction of Rivers House of Assembly has prolonged their tenure. The Martin Amaewhule-led Assembly modified the law to allow LG chairmen to extend their term by six months due to Fubara’s alleged failure to hold local government elections. While speaking at the 2024 Eid-el-Kabir celeb...

Cameroon-Nigeria trade leaks over $15m – Gov Otu tells World Bank team

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has disclosed that various leakages in international border trade between Nigeria and Cameroon result in losses exceeding $15 million. He lamented that the burgeoning trade at the Mfum International Border does not yield any meaningful revenues to the state tax net. He advised that the substantial trans-African trade through the border be closely monitored. Otu spoke when he hosted a team from the World Bank in Calabar, the state capital. The team was in Cross River State on a fact-finding mission to federal government agencies in the state, as well as to examine issues limiting trans-African free trade. The Cross River State governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has called on the World Bank and other multilateral agencies to assist in bridging the soci...

Euro 2024: He celebrated for winning goal-kick – Neville criticises Arsenal defender

Former Manchester United captain, Gary Neville, has criticised Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney amid the ongoing Euro 2024 in Germany. Neville insisted that Tierney got ‘carried away’ during Scotland’s 5-1 Euro 2024 defeat to Germany. According to him, the defender still has a long way to go after he celebrated with Andy Robertson for winning a goal-kick during the encounter. “They were getting caught up in the first five minutes,” Neville said on ITV. “What I thought was a significant moment in the first couple of minutes in the game was when one of their experienced players, Kieran Tierney, playing for Arsenal Football Club, he celebrated winning a goal kick like it was almost the last minute of the game. “I just thought, “oh no”. This is a marathon, this match. You have such a long way to g...

Abdulmumuni Abiola, a brother to Kola Abiola and son of the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late MKO Abiola, has criticised the poor handling of his father’s legacies. He expressed his disappointment in the podcast MIC ON with Seun Okinbaloye, released Saturday night. He also blamed Kola, Abiola’s eldest son, who he said was in a position to hoist his father’s legacy but failed to do so. This is as he alleged that Kola, who could have carried on with his father’s struggle, was in a relationship with former Head of State General Ibrahim Babangida’s daughter while his father was in prison. Babangida’s regime annulled the 1993 presidential election, which was adjudg...
