Oyo State’s Pledge to Put an End to Illegal Mining

The Oyo State Government has emphasized its dedication to addressing the issue of illegal mining within the state.

It was highlighted that illegal mining has resulted in significant harm to the environment and has jeopardized the health and well-being of the state’s residents.

During a stakeholders’ sensitization and consultative forum held at the House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, the Director-General of Oyo State Mineral Development Agency, Abiodun Oni, reiterated this commitment.

Oni expressed, “The administration will not tolerate any form of illegal mining in the state, and today’s forum will concentrate on Executive Order 001/2023, which primarily focuses on safeguarding mining communities in Oyo State.

“Illegal mining results in substantial financial losses for the state, with both the state and federal governments missing out on the benefits.

“Hence, it is essential for the government to take action, with the involvement of Kings and Baales through the signing of consent letters.”

The state government pledges to actively participate in activities within the communities, including the Community Development Agreement, to ensure that the activities of any investors are properly regulated for the benefit of the state, federal government, local government, and the community.

Offering a goodwill message, Anthony Ogunsola, Chairman of the House of Assembly Committee on Solid Minerals, highlighted that many current challenges arise from the infiltration of unknown individuals into communities, leading to insecurity, kidnappings, robberies, and other social crimes.

He urged Kings and Baales to collaborate with the government in addressing these issues, noting that Governor Seyi Makinde’s endorsement of Executive Order 001/2023 has brought relief to the communities.

Ogunsola also called on the state’s citizens to continue supporting the current administration to reap further benefits of democracy.

Commandant of NSCDC, Oyo State Command, Padonu Augustine, assured all stakeholders of their commitment to establishing safe and secure mineralized communities, aiming to boost the economy and create investment opportunities.

Augustine revealed that Commandant General Dr. Ahmed Audi recently embraced a proactive approach, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals, by training some corps personnel as mines marshals to combat illegal mining in the state.
