Overcoming Depression and Suicidal Thoughts: A Journey of Resilience by a FUTA Undergraduate

Akadiri Opeyemi, a hearing-impaired entrepreneur, shares her story of struggling with low self-esteem, depression, and suicidal thoughts on her path to self-actualization. In an interview with TEMITOPE ADETUNJI, the 28-year-old reflects on overcoming life’s hurdles after losing her hearing to measles in childhood, turning her challenges into inspiration for others.

 What was your upbringing like?

Hailing from Akoko in Ondo State, my childhood was marked by challenges as my parents’ love waned when my hearing impairment surfaced.

Were you born with a hearing impairment?

No, I contracted measles at seven, which led to a year-long illness affecting my hearing. The aftermath left lasting impacts, including becoming partially deaf during my early school years.

There were struggles that ensued, and seeking medical intervention became a recurring theme in my journey to manage my health challenges.

How did your parents react to your condition?

Initially, my parents grappled with denial and resorted to unconventional remedies before eventually acknowledging and seeking professional help for my hearing impairment.

Despite challenges, I persevered, and my determination led me to pursue higher education at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, where I studied Ecotourism and Wildlife Management.

What was your experience in school as a hearing-impaired individual?

Navigating school life posed challenges as my hearing impairment affected classroom interactions and my self-esteem. Despite facing ridicule and struggles, I pressed on and graduated in 2022 after overcoming academic hurdles.

How did you cope with communication barriers?

Learning to read lips became a crucial communication tool for me, helping bridge the gap caused by my hearing impairment and empowering me to confront instances of misunderstanding and exploitation by others.

Through resilience and determination, I have transformed my experiences into sources of strength and inspiration, paving the way for a successful entrepreneurial journey despite the odds stacked against me.

I have a way with words that people enjoy, and I take pleasure in imparting knowledge. Being a cheerful individual, my speech carries a blend of British and American inflections. Conversing effortlessly and effectively with others is something I excel at, and I achieve this through the skill of lip-reading.

During challenging times, what keeps you motivated?

I hold onto the belief that brighter days lie ahead and that tough times are temporary, while resilient individuals endure. With faith that God remains in control, I trust that favorable outcomes are on the horizon.

The hearing issues I face can be traced back to the impact of physical discipline from my mother, leading to a jaw dislocation in 2018 following one such instance of punishment.

The memory of running to the school health center, unable to articulate my words due to severe pain, remains vivid. Each attempt to speak only worsened the condition.

Upon referral to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo, my elder sister, then a corps member, provided financial support through my father, who accompanied me to seek medical assistance.

At the hospital, detailing the events led the doctor to commend my recollection of childhood incidents before examining my ears, marred by past attempts at local remedies.

Every adverse experience seemed indelibly etched in my memory, as remarked upon by the doctor regarding my remarkable recollection.

The doctor highlighted the potential harm caused by amateur treatments on my ears, emphasizing the importance of seeking professional care to prevent lasting damage.

Despite the prescribed medication and pain relief measures, the lack of follow-up from my father exacerbated my withdrawal and the lingering effects of the ear trauma.

The echoes of those past slaps linger to this day, with the doctor attributing the persistence of the issue to the untreated impact of the physical punishment.

Reflecting on my journey, distancing myself from my parents subsequent to my NYSC completion, renting a separate accommodation in Akure marked a turning point.

Who serves as your inspiration, and why?

Being fueled by self-motivation, I find strength in embracing the identity bestowed upon me by a higher power. Overcoming adversities like the measles outbreak in my youth instills in me the drive to strive for excellence.

What leisure pursuits bring you joy?

Engaging in writing, indulging in K-dramas and C-dramasi form part of my recreational choices. Embracing solitude, I allow my thoughts to flow freely through writing.

Venturing into entrepreneurship, I manage a small-scale perfume business that sprouted from a wellspring of inspiration.

How do you juggle personal and professional commitments?

Navigating the complexities of life with a hearing impairment presents its challenges. Relying on written communication due to auditory limitations, I grapple with societal pressures concerning my personal life, including inquiries about relationships and marriage status.

Could you recount a joyful personal memory?

Moments such as gaining admission to FUTA in 2015, receiving a generous financial gift from a friend in December 2021, commencing my perfume venture, and being gifted a new phone within the same period, stand out as sources of happiness.

Do you receive support from your family?

Both morally and occasionally financially, my family stands as a pillar of support. Embracing a solitary path, I yearn for acknowledgment from someone who recognizes my inherent value.

Have you encountered instances of shame?

Enduring body-shaming due to my physique and discrimination stemming from my hearing impairment have left lasting impacts. Memories of being marginalized in group settings evoke painful recollections from the past.

Is there a memorable experience you wish to share?
