Declaration of Suspects Wanted in Okuama Killings Illegal, Says Falana

Femi Falana, a Human Rights lawyer, has criticized the Nigerian Army’s decision to declare eight suspects wanted in connection with the deaths of 17 soldiers in Okuama community, Delta State, stating that it is against the law to declare murder suspects wanted.

Falana cautioned the military to handle the case of the slain soldiers properly and avoid any mishandling of the investigation.

He emphasized on Thursday that the action taken by the defence headquarters to declare the murder suspects wanted is entirely unlawful.

He further stated, “The investigation of the suspects involved in the brutal killing of the 17 officers and soldiers should be handed over by the federal government directing the defence headquarters.”

Highlighting that murder does not fall under military jurisdiction, Falana warned of the consequences if the government does not intervene, expressing concerns that the handling of the tragic incident will be severely compromised.

During the burial ceremony on Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu vowed to ensure the perpetrators face justice.

Tinubu urged the Okuama elders and chiefs to collaborate with the military to identify and apprehend the gunmen responsible for the heinous crime.
