OGISEC Clarifies: N250,000 Fee Targeted Towards Political Parties, Not Candidates

Clarifying the administrative charges for the upcoming 2024 local government elections in Ogun State, OGSIEC has confirmed that the fees are aimed at political parties rather than individual candidates.

It was reported by NewsNow that during a stakeholder meeting, the Commission announced that chairmanship candidates from different political parties are required to pay a sum of N250,000.

The Chairman of the Commission, Babatunde Osibodu, specified that male councillorship candidates need to pay N150,000, while female candidates are expected to pay N100,000 for the election scheduled for November 16, 2024.

According to NewsNow, this fee has triggered strong reactions from various political parties in the state, labeling it as excessive and unjustifiable.

However, the Chairman of the Commission, in a radio interview in Abeokuta, emphasized that these charges are applicable to parties fielding candidates for chairmanship or councillorship positions in the election.

Osibodu justified the fee as a means to enhance participation and dedication among political parties.

He stated, “Every party is required to pay the administrative fee. The act of investment often results in increased value. By financially supporting their candidates, parties will demonstrate stronger dedication, motivating more than just a few of the 19 registered parties to express interest.”

Osibodu affirmed that the Commission possesses the legal authority to impose the fee, having consulted legal advisors and obtained approval from the State House of Assembly.

In response to the concerns raised by Itunu Abioro, the Public Relations Officer of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Ogun State, Osibodu mentioned that the Commission is empowered to establish its own electoral guidelines.

He highlighted the release of the election timetable and guidelines as the initial phase in the electoral process, ensuring that further consultations with political parties and stakeholders will ensue.

Reiterating OGISEC’s dedication to conducting a fair, transparent, and credible election, Osibodu mentioned that all efforts are geared towards the advancement of the state.

Furthermore, he emphasized the significance of party involvement, stating, “If political parties opt out of participation, they forfeit the right to complain if a single party dominates the election. Non-participation is synonymous with accepting defeat.”
