Ofili finishes 6th as US Thomas wins women’s 200m gold

Nigerian Athlete Favour Ofili Comes in 6th Place as US’ Thomas Clinches Gold in Women’s 200m

In the final race of the women’s 200 meters at the 2024 Paris Olympics in France, Nigerian athlete Favour Ofili finished in sixth place.

The 21-year-old sprinter completed the distance in 22.24 seconds, securing the 6th position behind United States’ Gabrielle Thomas, who won the gold with a time of 21.83 seconds.

Julien Alfred from Saint Lucia claimed the silver medal with a time of 22.08 seconds, while Brittany Brown from the USA secured the third position on the podium.

British athletes Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Ofili earned her spot in the final race with the third-best time in the semi-finals but faced tough competition from her rivals in the ultimate showdown.

She made history by becoming the first Nigerian to reach the event final since Mary Onyali achieved the feat in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Despite a swift start after the gun went off, Ofili lost momentum in the final 100 meters, ultimately finishing outside the top positions.

Her attention will now shift to the women’s 4×100 relay event scheduled to begin on Thursday.
