Obasanjo Laughs at Claims of Igbo Paternity

Laughing off the claims of his Igbo paternity, former President Olusegun Obasanjo expressed disbelief that anyone in Nigeria should be forced to leave any part of the country.

Emphasizing the importance of unity despite cultural differences, Obasanjo stated, “We own this country together.”

These comments were made during a meeting with the leadership of Ndigbo Amaka Progressive Market Association, a group representing major markets in Lagos State, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta.

Obasanjo, as conveyed by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, briefly touched on the paternity claim issue by saying, “It just makes me laugh.”

The former President acknowledged the group’s outreach to seek his support for the establishment of the Owerri Central Market, envisioned as a groundbreaking market in the country.

Regarding the market’s significance, Obasanjo mentioned that the idea for the Central Market in Owerri had been in consideration since the inception of Imo State, expressing optimism that it will finally come to fruition.

Reflecting on his commitment to a unified Nigeria, Obasanjo reiterated, “We fought for unity in Nigeria, not to drive Igbos away but to welcome them. Anyone suggesting the expulsion of others should be the one to leave.”

In response, Emeka Emmanuel, the spokesperson for the group, highlighted the market’s potential as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, pledging their support for its growth and development.

Emmanuel also appealed for Obasanjo’s assistance in realizing the global market vision, which aims to provide economic opportunities and reduce unemployment.

He emphasized that the former President’s support would greatly benefit their members in securing loans to acquire shops and spaces within the market.
