Nollywood Actress remanded in prison for spraying and stepping on newly redesigned Naira notes

The Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, has ordered the remand of Nollywood actress, Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, at Kirikiri prison pending the determination of her bail application. This decision was made by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke on Monday, February 13.

Omoseyin was apprehended by operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Fraud Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for tampering with the new Naira notes. The arrest took place on February 1, 2023, in Ikoyi, Lagos, and she was subsequently handed over to the EFCC for investigation.

The 31-year-old actress was arrested after a video surfaced online showing her spraying and stepping on the newly redesigned Naira notes at a party. In her statement to the Commission, Omoseyin claimed that she received the new Naira notes from her fans at the party and did not know the individuals who gave her the money.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Omoseyin before Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke on a two-count charge. One count accuses her of tampering with the sum of N100,000.00 issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying and stepping on it during a social occasion at Monarch event center in Lekki on January 28, 2023.

When the charges were read to her, Omoseyin pleaded not guilty. The prosecution counsel requested the court for a trial date and asked that the defendant be remanded in an appropriate correctional facility. The defense counsel, Adenike Goncalves, prayed the court to grant bail to the defendant pending the hearing and determination of the case.

Justice Aneke deferred ruling on the bail application to February 15, 2023, and remanded the defendant in Kirikiri correctional facility.
