Nollywood actors chosen based on social media following – Uzor Arukwe

According to Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe, there was a period during which having a strong presence on social media was a key factor in securing acting roles from certain producers in the Nigerian film industry.

He revealed that rather than talent, filmmakers would select actors based on their social media followers.

The actor, known for his role in ‘A Tribe Called Judah,’ acknowledged that this posed a significant challenge for him in the early stages of his career.

Recalling his struggles, the 40-year-old shared with Pulse in a recent interview, “I vividly remember my beginnings. It was quite a hurdle for me.”

He further explained, “There was a time in the industry when emphasis was placed on Instagram and Twitter followers, among other factors. I found it puzzling but realized I had to come to terms with it because production houses were more focused on your online following. ‘But can he act?’ is the question I always pose. However, there are talented actors with a substantial following who have excelled in this aspect.”
