According to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), there are currently no plans to increase electricity tariffs. The NERC spokesperson, Usman Arabi, refuted reports claiming an imminent tariff hike in a released statement.
The statement clarified that the recent minor review of the 2015 Multi Year Tariff Order was a retrospective adjustment to account for changes in macro-economic indices for the years 2016, 2017, and 2018. It aimed to address revenue shortfalls resulting from the disparity between approved tariffs and actual end-user tariffs. The NERC emphasized that no tariff increase has been approved by the commission through the order.
The NERC underscored its commitment to conducting periodic tariff reviews in line with prevailing methodology and assured stakeholders of consultations on any potential tariff increments in the future.
