No licence has been issued for 5G in Nigeria, its study is still ongoing – Minister of Communication, Isa Pantami

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, has confirmed that no 5G license has been issued in Nigeria. In response to social media rumors linking 5G technology to the spread of coronavirus, Pantami emphasized that the administration under President Buhari would not jeopardize the health and well-being of its citizens for technological advancement. He disclosed that a three-month study trial, initiated on November 25, is ongoing to assess the health and security implications of deploying 5G in Nigeria. According to Pantami, the trial has been completed, and the reporting process is currently underway. The National Frequency Management Council (NFMC), chaired by Pantami, has not authorized the release of any bulk frequency spectrum for 5G deployment. He also instructed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to ensure active participation of experts, security agencies, and stakeholders in the trial process. Pantami emphasized that the government would make informed decisions on 5G after consulting with experts and the public, and urged the NCC to address any questions or concerns from citizens regarding 5G. He expressed gratitude to the public for their engagement on the issue and assured them that the government prioritizes the welfare, health, and security of the public in considering the deployment of any technology.
