NLC clarifies that N35,000 wage award is different from N70,000 minimum wage

In Lagos, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Chapter emphasizes that the recently awarded N35,000 wage in the state should not be mistaken for or considered as a replacement for the newly enacted N70,000 minimum wage.

The State NLC Chairman, Funmi Sessi, expressed concerns over a commission’s statement claiming that the state surpasses the N70,000 minimum wage for its workers.

Advocating for a revised wage structure that starts at the approved N70,000 to appropriately reflect the varying ranks and salary levels of all public service employees in the state, including allowances, the union urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to establish a wage committee for prompt implementation.

Commending Governor Sanwo-Olu for prioritizing worker welfare and being the first to implement the N35,000 wage award as a relief, the NLC stressed that the award does not encompass allowances.

Additionally, the union urged private sector employers to comply with the new minimum wage laws and prioritize the well-being of workers, emphasizing their crucial role in any business’s success.

Citing the responsibility of government agencies to ensure compliance and urging them to enforce the regulations fearlessly, the union called for proactive measures to guarantee adherence.
