The United Kingdom Mourns Loss of Nigerian-born Health Worker to COVID-19

Carol Jamabo, a Nigerian-born British health worker, passed away as a result of COVID-19 complications in the UK.

At the age of 56, the mother of two and community caregiver at the Cherish Elderly Care in Bury, Greater Manchester, succumbed to the virus last Wednesday after testing positive for Coronavirus.

Having relocated to the UK from Nigeria in the early 1990s, Jamabo had served as a key worker for more than 25 years. Her experience also included roles in the prison service and as an NHS administrator at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London.

Despite not having any major underlying health conditions, Jamabo’s health declined rapidly while she was on a ventilator at Salford Royal Hospital. Her nephew, Dakuro Fiberesima, confirmed her passing, stating that she had been transferred to an intensive care unit at the hospital where her condition worsened.

He shared, “The youngest son is in a terrible position. He was extremely close to her. He was living with her.  She was just an amazing aunt. Growing up in an African background, the aunts are very strict, but she was fun and had such a positive character.”
