Nigerian arts and culture DG, Olusegun Runsewe allegedly indicted in ‘multi-million naira scam’

According to a report released by the office of the Auditor-General of the Federation, Olusegun Runsewe, the Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture, has been implicated in a multi-million naira scam. Runsewe, who previously made headlines due to his confrontation with cross-dresser Bobrisky earlier this year, has allegedly been involved in various irregularities.

The report highlighted several discrepancies, including the unexplained purchase of a car worth N5.6 million shortly after his assumption of office in 2017, without proper certification from the agency’s transport officer and auditor.

Furthermore, the audit report revealed possible instances of financial mismanagement and diversion of funds for personal use. It noted the absence of supporting documents for certain payments, irregularities in contract awards, and unaccounted fees.

Runsewe was directed to recover significant amounts paid to contractors and the servicing company before providing evidence of the recoveries for verification by the office of the auditor general. Additionally, he was asked to refund a substantial sum to the treasury and furnish evidence of the refund for further verification.

Based on these alleged violations, the Auditor-General, Anthony Ayine, has called for sanctions against Runsewe in accordance with section 3129 of the Financial Regulation, which addresses disciplinary actions for officers found in gross misconduct.
