Nigeria is now left with 24,000 doctors – NMA

The NMA has revealed that the number of actively licensed physicians in Nigeria has dwindled to just 24,000 due to a recent brain drain. This figure is concerning considering the country’s population of over 200 million. The NMA President, Ojinmah Uche, highlighted the challenge during a policy dialogue on Nigeria’s health sector brain drain and its implications for sustainable child and family health service delivery. He emphasized the impact of this shortage on delivering essential maternal and child health services, noting that the current doctor-to-patient ratio is as high as one doctor to 30,000 patients in some southern states and one doctor to 45,000 patients in some northern states. This has resulted in patients having to travel long distances to access medical care, particularly in rural areas. Ojinmah attributed the brain drain to various factors such as inadequate funding for the health sector, rigorous medical education, limited house job opportunities, employment difficulties, poor compensation, inter-professional rivalry, insecurity, and more.
