NIGCOMSAT seeks local solutions to boost agric

Nigerian Communications Satellite Ltd has advocated for the integration of homegrown Internet of Things technologies to revolutionise the country’s agricultural sector and strengthen the national economy.

The Managing Director and CEO of NIGCOMSAT, Jane Egerton-Idehen, highlighted the significant potential of these technologies during a visit to TD4PAI, a non-governmental organisation and IoT hub in Abuja, recently.

“Agriculture plays a crucial role in Nigeria’s economy (25 per cent of the country’s GDP in 2023), and technology can transform how we maximise this sector,” Egerton-Idehen stated.

During the visit, TD4PAI founder Agu Agu demonstrated real-time data solutions designed to boost agricultural productivity.

The solutions include IoT sensors and analytical dashboards that provide farmers with critical insights.

“I believe in homegrown innovation; enabling our Nigerian digital economy through Nigerian enterprises. Witnessing TD4PAI’s efforts firsthand, I am convinced of the transformative impact these technologies can have,” Egerton-Idehen remarked.

The NIGCOMSAT team also explored the Unity Board, an AI/IoT STEAM education kit, and the Udene Board, an RFID/IoT DAQaaS platform.

Egerton-Idehen emphasised the potential of combining those innovations with NIGCOMSAT’s satellite connectivity to deliver smart solutions nationwide.

“I am particularly proud to see a revolution in farming practices by leveraging IoT technology for effective soil monitoring starting at home,” she added.

TD4PAI’s commitment to inclusivity and community support was also praised,

The organisation actively engaged underrepresented groups, providing free digital skills training and industry exposure, the MD said.

According to Egerton-Idehen, in collaboration with NIGCOMSAT, the goal is to drive these technological advancements further and co-create a more prosperous future for Nigeria.

She affirmed NIGCOMSAT’s dedication to supporting local enterprises and driving the adoption of IoT technologies to bolster Nigeria’s economy.
