NiDCOM mourns Nigerian student killed by policemen in Canada

The tragic demise of a 19-year-old Nigerian student, Afolabi Stephen, allegedly at the hands of policemen in Manitoba, Canada, has evoked sorrow from the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa. The incident took place on December 31, 2023. Although specific details surrounding his death are still unclear, the Winnipeg, Manitoba Police Department released a statement stating that their officers had responded to a call concerning a young male behaving erratically. The situation escalated, resulting in the discharge of a firearm by the police and the subsequent loss of Stephen’s life. Dabiri-Erewa, through the Director of Media and Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, expressed her condolences and assured that justice would prevail. She also stated that the Nigerian mission in Ottawa is in contact with the Canadian authorities, who have assured that a thorough investigation into the unfortunate incident is underway. The Chairman also extended profound sympathies to Afolabi’s family and friends, praying for his innocent soul to rest in peace.
