The tragic demise of a 19-year-old Nigerian student, Afolabi Stephen, allegedly at the hands of policemen in Manitoba, Canada, has evoked sorrow from the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa. The incident took place on December 31, 2023. Although specific details surrounding his death are still unclear, the Winnipeg, Manitoba Police Department released a statement stating that their officers had responded to a call concerning a young male behaving erratically. The situation escalated, resulting in the discharge of a firearm by the police and the subsequent loss of Stephen’s life. Dabiri-Erewa, through the Director of Media and Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, expressed her condolences and assured that justice would prevail.
