NBA Providing Free Legal Assistance to #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria Demonstrators

In support of the ongoing hunger protest, the Nigerian Bar Association has established a program offering free legal aid to individuals whose fundamental rights may be violated.

The President of the association, Yakubu Maikyau, released a statement on Thursday, conveyed through the NBA National Publicity Secretary, Akorede Lawal. It was mentioned that directives have been issued to all 130 branches of the association to handle any cases where the fundamental rights of protesters are infringed upon.

Maikyau emphasized the importance of peaceful protest and urged law enforcement to act professionally and respect the rights of all individuals. Additionally, a committee has been formed to oversee interactions between protesters and law enforcement.

The statement part of the statement reads, “The President of the Nigerian Bar Association Mr. Yakubu Maikyau, has yesterday, July 31, 2024, directed all the Chairmen/Chairpersons of the 130 Branches of the NBA to ensure that their respective Human Rights Committees take up observed or reported cases of breach of fundamental right (s) of any citizen, harassment, intimidation or torture perpetrated by law enforcement agents, the protesters or other identified members of the public in the course of the protest.

“The Chairmen/chairpersons of NBA branches have also been directed to establish Situation Monitoring Committees to oversee and report on activities and interactions between law enforcement agents and protesters. An online monitoring form has been provided for this purpose.”

“To facilitate this effort, the NBA has created Legal Support Services Teams nationwide, led by prominent members such as the first Vice President, Mrs. Linda Rose Bala; Chairman NBA-SPIDEL, Sir Steve Adehi, (SAN); and Chairman, NBA Human Rights Institute, Mr. Chinonye Obiagwu, (SAN). Collaboration with the Inspector General of Police has also been initiated by the NBA President.

“As the protest begins on August 1, 2024, the NBA encourages all citizens, including its members participating in the protest, to exercise their rights peacefully and lawfully. Similarly, law enforcement agencies are urged to uphold professionalism and respect human rights during their enforcement activities.”

The hunger protest is slated to take place in all 36 states and the FCT starting on August 1 and continuing until August 10, with the aim of drawing attention to the economic challenges faced by the populace.
