Naval chief given seven days to explain 'unaccounted' N11.5m

The chief of naval staff, Ibok Ibas, has been given a deadline of seven days to provide an explanation to the House of Representatives committee on public accounts regarding an unaccounted N11.5 million. The query arose from the office of the auditor-general, citing the payment made by the Nigerian Navy for a four-bedroom apartment in Ikoyi, Lagos State. The receipt did not specify the duration of the rent, and there was a violation of financial regulations as Value Added Tax (VAT) was not deducted from the payment.

During the committee meeting, the chief of naval staff was not present, and dissatisfaction was expressed by the committee chairman, Wole Oke (PDP, Osun). He emphasized the importance of the military’s participation in democratic governance and insisted that the chief of naval staff or a senior officer must appear before the committee within seven days.
