Another National Grid Collapse in Nigeria

Once again, Nigeria faced a national grid collapse on Thursday.

Confirmation of this development came from the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, which informed its customers through social media.

At approximately 4:28 pm, the national grid collapsed, resulting in a countrywide power outage.

The AEDC released a statement saying: “Dear valued customers, please note that the current power outage is due to a system failure in the national grid. This occurred at around 16:28 hours on March 28, 2024, causing the current outage in our franchise area.”

“We appreciate your patience as all stakeholders are working diligently to restore normal power supply,” the Abuja DisCo added.

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company also addressed the issue, stating: “Dear valued customer, a system collapse occurred at 16:28 hrs, leading to a loss of power supply across our network.

“We are collaborating with our partners and hoping for a swift restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated once power supply is back. Thank you for your understanding.”

NewsNow revealed that a similar incident happened on February 4.

It is worth noting that on December 12, 2023, Nigeria experienced a system collapse in the national grid, which caused power generation to plummet from 4,032.8MW to 43.5MW the next day.

Data from TCN during that time indicated that electricity levels rose to 115.4MW at around 3 pm on December 11, 2023, before climbing further to 240.9MW at about 4 pm.

According to a report by the International Energy Agency, Nigeria’s national power grid failed 46 times between 2017 and 2023.

The report highlighted increased nationwide blackouts in 2023, particularly on September 14 when a grid collapse occurred due to a fire on a major transmission line.
