NAFDAC Issues Alert Regarding Unregistered B-GAG Syrup

Warning the public about the illicit production and distribution of unregistered B-GAG mist pot CIT syrup, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken action. The public notice No. 023/2024 was released by Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of the agency in Abuja on Sunday.

An unnamed company called Babban Gida Agalawa General Enterprises was identified as the seller of the unregistered product, which was being sold in a pet bottle. NAFDAC’s Post Marketing Surveillance Directorate Officers discovered the product during a surveillance operation in Maiduguri, Borno, and Keffi, Nasarawa States.

The product did not have a NAFDAC registration number and had a misleading label, as per the statement released.

According to NAFDAC, the illegal marketing of medicines or counterfeit drugs poses a significant risk to public health. Prof. Adeyeye emphasized that product safety, quality, and efficacy cannot be ensured without compliance with regulatory provisions.

The batch number of the counterfeit product was identified as 0070, with a manufacturing date of 01/02/2024 and an expiry date of 01/02/2027. The manufacturer’s address was disclosed as No. 883/884 Western Bypass Ring Road, Kumbosto Local Government, Kano State.

NAFDAC Zonal Directors and State Coordinators were directed to conduct surveillance operations to eliminate the illegal products within their respective zones and states.

Consumers and caregivers were advised to refrain from using the product and to only obtain medical products from authorized and licensed suppliers. It was recommended to carefully inspect the authenticity and physical condition of products before purchase or use.

Healthcare professionals and consumers were urged by Prof. Adeyeye to report any suspicions regarding the sale of substandard or falsified medicines or medical devices to the nearest NAFDAC office. Adverse events or side effects related to the use of medicinal products should be reported through NAFDAC E-reporting platforms.
