N3.5m up for grabs in 10km Surulere Marathon

More than 500 runners, primarily hailing from the Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State, are set to vie for a portion of the N3.5m total cash prize at the inaugural Surulere 10km Marathon. The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday in the vibrant heart of the state, as reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.

The 10km marathon marks the commencement of a dual-event named ‘LERE FUNATHON’, jointly organized by UB40 Sports Marketing, Starlite Sports Marketing, with the backing of the Surulere Local Government Area and the Lagos State Sports Commission.

Sulaimon Yusuf, the Chairman of Surulere LGA, unveiled the prize money for the competition on Friday and reiterated their dedication to continuing the tradition.

Expressing his satisfaction with the collaboration, Yusuf stated, “Our runners should be adequately prepared. The chairman has committed to award N1m to the winner, N500,000 to the runner-up, and N250,000 to the third-placed athletes in both male and female categories,” conveyed by the LGA’s Supervisory Councillor on Sports.

Representing the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, Deji Aladegbemi highlighted how the concept has catalyzed the advent of marathon competitions across other local government areas within the state.

“This initiative holds great value for the Lagos State Sports Commission as it fosters community unity and promotes a healthy lifestyle. It will serve as a unifying platform for everyone residing in Surulere, transcending regional boundaries. This exemplifies the positive impact sports can have on our society. Adequate measures will be in place to manage traffic disruptions during the race without inconveniencing our residents,” Aladegbemi assured.

Sola Lawson, the Chairman of the local organizing committee, affirmed their preparedness to establish this as an annual fixture in Surulere and Lagos State.

“We appreciate the strong backing from our local government chairperson and the Lagos State Sports Commission, whose swift approval and endorsement have been invaluable. In today’s context, a N1m reward is significant for a 10k race. Additionally, besides the monetary prizes, the winners will receive various items from our sponsors, including medals and certificates,” shared Lawson.

The race is set to kick off at 6:30 am from the Teslim Balogun Stadium and conclude at the renowned stable on Bode Thomas avenue, followed by a festive atmosphere.
