Multichoice changes course, agrees to broadcast AFCON matches on Supersports

On Wednesday, Multichoice, the parent company of DStv, announced its decision to broadcast the African Cup of Nations tournament taking place in Ivory Coast.

The AFCON games are scheduled to be held between January 13 and February 11, 2024.

Initially, it had declared that it would not broadcast the tournament on its SuperSport channels due to the failure to secure broadcasting rights.

It stated, “SuperSport Channel will not broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 scheduled for January 13th – February 11th, 2024, because the channel has not secured the rights to broadcast the tournament.

“However, AFCON 2023 games will be available through our partner broadcast stations on Free to Air (FTA) channels.

“Multichoice Africa remains committed to ensuring football fans across Africa continue to enjoy unrivaled access to entertainment and football games available on DStv and GOtv platforms including, the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, Zambian Super League, and many more of football’s most prestigious competitions.”

However, reversing their earlier decision, @DstvNg announced on Wednesday via X that all 52 matches will be broadcast on Supersports.

“🇳🇬No gree for anybody! Watch all 52 matches of the #afcon2023    on @supersports,” it tweeted.

Similarly, the Nigerian Television Authority disclosed its plan to transmit all 52 AFCON matches.

Announcing this, Africa’s largest TV network, NTA, revealed their partnership with Afro Sports through a Memorandum of Understanding for the transmission of the Africa Cup Of Nations matches in Cote D’ivoire.
