MTN sees a 55% surge in data revenue

Data revenue at MTN Nigeria has experienced a substantial growth of 54.7% in the first half of 2024. This increase was primarily boosted by the expansion of the user base and higher data usage levels.

The company’s financial results for the period ending in June 2024, revealed these developments. The rise in data revenue was propelled by improvements in service quality and a surge in the demand for data services.

MTN also made price adjustments to certain data bundles in Q4 2023, which further contributed to the upsurge in data revenue.

The growth in user base at the telecom operator was evident in the 82% coverage of the 4G network, a slight increase of 0.5% from December 2023.

Moreover, the 5G coverage expanded to 12.7%, marking a growth of 1.5%.

Expressing satisfaction with the robust commercial progress in the connectivity business and platforms, MTN attributed this success to a growing user base driving a service revenue growth of 32.6%.

The company highlighted, “This growth was further strengthened by some positive base effects, particularly in Q1, emphasizing the persistent demand for our data, voice, fintech, and digital services, all of which achieved double-digit growth.”

The penetration of smartphones also saw an increase to 55.9%, a rise of 2.9% year-on-year, leading to a robust 30.5% growth in data usage to 10.6 GB per user.

Furthermore, data traffic recorded an impressive growth of 42.6%, according to the report.
